The Ninth Doctor

Background

The Doctor's life story is quite lengthy, given his nine hundred plus years of existence. This specific incarnation, his ninth, is one who's exact origin is still somewhat clouded in mystery. Sometime after the Eighth's voyages with Charley Pollard and Crizz in the alternate dimension they were trapped in (see: Big Finish's Eighth Doctor Audios), The Doctor lost his companions and regenerated. The specificities of the past incarnations are not perfectly prevalent, but some main characteristics are. The Doctor is a traveller, an explorer, a meddler. He is known as the Oncoming Storm, Merlin, former Lord High President of Gallifrey, and many other things. His life is mostly spent in transition from adventure to adventure.

After regenerating into this particular Doctor, one who's voice sounds as if he is "from the North" and has a tendency to babble in a friendly manner, he met up with a young girl named Rose Tyler. Together, they embarked on a series of journeys, life-and-death adventures, and travels. They bonded, and there was definitely the sparks of love, despite the centuries of age difference. Along these travels, they joined up with a charismatic fellow named Jack Harkness, and a trio of travellers was born. Their time together, however, was short lived.

Where Canon and The Doctor go separate ways

After returning a Slitheen woman back to her home planet (as she had de-aged to the point of being an egg), the Doctor left Jack and Rose temporarily on the planet Raxacoricofallapotorius. He did this in order to facilitate investigating a temporal anomaly in the vicinity of Virginia. This led to the Doctor attending Parents' Weekend at Fandom High.

After those events that unfolded, the Doctor returned to pick up Jack and Rose from their temporary abandonment (which, through the power of time travel, they didn't even notice). This led to their being ripped from their travel by the Daleks, in a ploy through the Game Station. Here, the Daleks, thought destroyed in the Time War, revealed their continued existence. In a suicidal effort to save Rose's life, the Doctor sent the TARDIS off with her inside, leaving himself trapped on the station, attempting to complete his plan to eliminate the Dalek threat... a long shot at best.

Rose, flailing mightily at having been sent off, did some rather rash things to the TARDIS, including ripping open the console. Here, she absorbed the energy of the space-time vortex, something you're really not supposed to do. She returned in the TARDIS to the station, destroyed the Daleks with the power she'd absorbed, and then began to burn up from the energy.

Here (other than the Fandom High visit) is where I will break from Doctor Who canon.

In the series, the Doctor absorbs the power of the vortex from Rose by kissing her. This Doctor will not have had the heart to do it. He instead watches her burn up, turned to dust by the power of space and time itself. Furious at himself, he takes it upon himself to attempt to do right what he did wrong. He'll not break the laws of time so he can go back and save Rose, but instead decides that educating people in the ins and outs of the universe might in some tiny ripple effect. If anything, it'd help pass some time in a way that wasn't simply replacing Rose and going back out into his usual life.
