Education
Elementary and Middle School
- Rory attended Stars Hollow Elementary School and Stars Hollow Middle School, and has known Lane Kim since her first day of kindergarten. Canon states that being as shy and quiet as Rory was, Lane was one of her few friends aside from her mother.
High School Prior to Fandom High
- Rory attended Stars Hollow High School for a few weeks into her freshman year before being accepted into the prestigious Chilton Academy in an effort to increase her chances of eventually getting into Harvard. At Chilton, Rory met Paris Geller and Tristan DuGrey (whose name's spelling changes frequently, thanks muchly, writers) among others.
Rory's first year at Chilton found her more shy, introverted, and unpopular than she had been even before in her academic career. Peers saw her as serious competition, and Rory found it easier to remain antisocial than attempt to interact with them. However, by midway through her sophomore year, she had gained the respect of Paris, her most formiddable nemesis, and an unspoken co-editorship of The Franklin, their school newspaper. Had Rory remained at Chilton for her junior year of high school, she would have served as student body vice president to Paris's presidency.
Canon Relationships
Family
Lorelai Gilmore-Danes
- "She's pretty."
"She's perfect."
- an exchange between Christopher and Lorelai in flashback, season 3
Due to Rory being born when Lorelai was only sixteen, the two practically grew up together, and the Lorelais (as they are often called) often seem more like sisters than mother and daughter.
When Rory's grandparents on either side learned of the pregnancy, there was talk of terminating it, and when that was ruled out, marriage was suggested. Lorelai resisted, and after spending a few months in her parents' house in Hartford after Rory's birth, she moved to Stars Hollow and gained employment at the Independence Inn as a maid. Since they had nowhere else to live, the owner of the inn (known only as "Mia" in canon) took pity on the pair, and Rory's earliest years were spent in a potting shed behind the inn before Lorelai could afford a house in town.
The bond between mother and daughter is extremely strong. They finish each other's sentences, know each other inside and out, and have been a part of nearly every important event in the other's life.
Christopher Hayden
- "Who could not like being kissed by a Gilmore girl?"
- Christopher Hayden, season 5
Rory's father canonically shows up on a whim, and seems to only remember that he has a teenage daughter when he feels like it. Nearly every attempt to interact with Rory ends with Christopher feeling impressed by his daughter's maturity and intelligence, and Rory feeling like her father barely remembers her.
Christopher isn't a bad man - he simply wasn't ready for fatherhood at the age of sixteen. In his mid-thirties, however, he fathered a child with his workaholic fiancée, Sherry Tinsdale. Sherry wasn't ready for motherhood, and abandoned Chris with their daughter, Gigi. Due to this, Christopher has become slightly better at caring as a father naturally should, though Rory still often goes forgotten.
Luke Danes
- "Crazy people. Whole town should be medicated and put in a rec room with ping pong tables and hand puppets."
- Luke Danes, season 3
As Christopher was never around, Luke became Rory's surrogate father figure even before he was romantically involved with her mother. He's extremely protective of her, to the degree of throwing boys who he sees as having wronged her out of his diner and spoiling Rory within her mother's jurisdiction.
Naturally, this is wonderful for Rory's ego.
Richard and Emily Gilmore
- "Rory, I know you heard a lot of talk about various disappointments this evening, and I know you've heard a lot of talk about it in the past, but I want to make this very clear: you, young lady, your person and your existence, have never ever been, not even for a second, included in that list. Do you understand me?"
- Emily Gilmore, season 5
Rory's maternal grandparents are convinced that she hung the moon, really. The girl can do no wrong. This is most likely due to projection - what the elder Gilmores wished their daughter could have been, they hope to see in their granddaughter.
While Rory was at Chilton, they paid her tuition in exchange for having dinner with them every Friday evening. At Fandom High, Richard and Emily pay for Rory's expenses with the caveat that she visit them when she goes home and keeps them updated via email.
Where Canon and Rory go separate ways
Rory is from an alternate version of her canon, in which her mother married Luke Danes several years ago. (Whereas in canon, Lorelai asked Luke to marry her at the conclusion of season 5, when Rory was twenty years old.)
Additionally, the timeline is very slightly off. The show begins with fifteen year-old Rory being accepted into Chilton for her sophomore year; FH!Rory began there one year earlier than that, so as to use the most of the high school canon information offered. Rory also turned seventeen in 2005; her canon birth year is 1984. Furthermore, due to unreliable information on her birthday (Wikipedia says 08/10/84, though canon dictates that it's much closer to Halloween), FH!Rory's birthday is 25/10/88.
Early in the summer prior to her enrollment at Fandom High, Rory was somewhat devastated by the sudden and immediate departure of her boyfriend, Jess Mariano. This depression and confusion drove her to look into boarding schools online, where she discovered information on Fandom High, apparent feeder school to the Ivy League.
Her mother took a job teaching there, her stepfather opened a diner, and Rory began at Fandom High.

Living Arrangements
Room 305
Rory originally lived in room 305 with Summer Roberts (I), who disappeared less than a month into the game. She then solicited another roommate, and wound up with Anya Jenkins. During this time period, she acquired her puppy, Vladdie.
Rory stayed in 305 until mid-November 2005.
Room 236
Rory and Vladdie moved into M. Parker's spare room following her first vampire attack. Rory no longer felt safe in 305, given that she had given an invitation to the vampire that had attacked her, plus she felt illogically betrayed by Anya. Due to these factors, she moved into her close friend Parker's room until she felt secure enough to move out to a room of her own.
Room 213
Rory chose to remain on the second floor, where the majority of her friends lived, and moved into 213 after the beginning of the second term of her junior year. 213 is a double, though Rory opted out of having a roommate. It has two beds (which have been pushed together to form a double), a desk and inflatable chair, several small bookcases (though there are also stacks of books around the room, as her collection grows every time she's allowed to invest in more books), and a basket in the corner where Vladdie sleeps. There is also a bathroom, which has an established sink, medicine cabinet, toilet and shower, but no tub.
Meerkat Cabin
When students were in cabins over the summer, Rory resides in Meerkat Cabin, side B, with Aeryn Sun, Isabel Evans, and Alanna Trebond. Side A houses Buffy Summers (II), Dawn Summers, Molly Hayes and Zack Addy.
Vladdie also lives in Rory's alcove, where the curtains are always drawn tightly to block out the sun.
Relationships
Rory's closest friends include Luke Skywalker, Aeryn Sun, John Crichton, and Angela Chase. In May 2008, she finally married long-time on/off boyfriend Anakin Skywalker
