Background
Ranma is the heir to the Saotome Anything Goes School of Martial Arts and, as such, has spent a lifetime suffering as his crazy father's experimental scholarly guinnea pig. As a result, Ranma has spent most of his life traveling and training, to mixed and traumatic results. For example, one method involved being mauled by starving cats while wearing a suit of sausages. In turn, because of this, Ranma has a strong, dehibilitating fear of cats, to a point where, if exposed too directly to them, he will snap and think he himself is a cat. Most famously, though, is the incident of the Spring of Drowned Girl, in which Ranma fell into when sparring with his father. This encounter with the cursed spring now causes Ranma to turn into a girl when cold water hits him. The only way to turn back to his male form is with warm or hot water. But things weren't entirely one-sided. His father fell into a different spring, and now turns into a panda when hit with cold water.
Where Canon and Ranma go separate ways
In the beginning of the series, Ranma's father arranges Ranma's marriage to one of the Tendo girls, and the series starts from there. This Ranma starts from there, too, but, instead of going with his father to meet the Tendo girls, Ranma runs away to Fandom High. And there you have it.
