Background
In canon, Peter Petrelli is a nurse who longs to help people and believes that he is destined for something special. However he is overshadowed by his go-getting older brother who would very much like for Peter to get his head out of the clouds.
After having reoccurring dreams about flying, Peter is convinced that he has this ability. But when he tests it by jumping off of a building it turns out that Nathan is the one with the power of flight, and Peter is back to seeming to be not so special after all.
As the season progresses Peter discovers that he does have a power, namely the power to absorb powers when he's around other heroes. He also has prophetic dreams, and he believes that he has a connection to his brother Nathan. He also believes that he has to help save the world, and tries to do so in spite of everyone who tries to convince him he's insane.
Where Canon and Character go separate ways
FH Peter's story started out as it did in "Genesis" with him dreaming of flight and trying to convince Nathan that it was possible. He jumped, got caught by Nathan, then ended up in the hospital when they both fell. However Peter is be 15 years old in this version, and his apparent suicide attempt actually got him something that he wanted: a chance to be special by coming to Fandom High.
Neither he nor his family knew the full story about Fandom High, but they knew it is a special kind of private school. Peter believed it would give him the education he needed to help him figure out what he's meant to be. His family believes it will keep Peter out of the public eye.
Peter has not met any of the other heroes from canon, and when he arrived in Fandom he didn't know about his own powers.

Discovery of His Powers
Upon arriving in Fandom Peter suspected he had a destiny, but he did not know what it was. Unbeknownst to him, he was copying the powers of those around him. Most notably Tannim, Door, and Tori.
Due to a conversation with his brother, Peter suspected he might be going insane. But when an emotional conversation with Cassie resulted in Peter shrinking down to weetiny size he put the pieces together and figured out what was really going on.
He's now rather dorkily excited about it.
Peter accidentally switched powers with Marie D'Ancanto for a week.
Peter went on a road trip to New York with Gavin, Isabel, Dawn, Karal, and Sam Winchester. During the trip, Sam found out about Nathan's powers.
During Dinosaur Weekend Peter ended up accidentally ODing from copying too many powers at once. He spent several days in the clinic before Claire helped him to heal. Later, Peter talked to Claire about their powers, and revealed the secret of Nathan's power.
Before Isabel left Fandom for what she thought was for good, she and Peter shared a kiss.
