Because Kawalsky's family were told that he was Killed In Action, Kawalsky was not allowed to make contact with them until a recent event (see below). His mother lived in Florida until her death in 2007. His younger sister (who is now much older than him) lives in New York with her husband and two sons.

NB: According to Kawalsky's dress blues in the episode Children of the Gods, he should be a command-level pilot. I'm taking this as a costuming error because the logistics of him having this training based on his expected career timeline are ridiculous. Considering they had his rank change from Captain to Major and back between scenes, it's a plausible explanation.
Career
Some of his career stuff is above in education, so I won't go over that again. He's been in special operations for a long time. He was a Captain in 1982 when he was on an op in East Germany with Jack O'Neill, so he would've been in the Air Force for 9 years by that stage.
At some point, someone took him up in a F-16B (the two-seater version) to participate in a simulated bombing run. This was a once-off and he's used the experience for one-upmanship ever since (including trying it on Sam Carter. It didn't work.)
He was part of the first Stargate mission to Abydos in the mid 90s. He went, he came back, he got reassigned and did more classified stuff. (I could make stuff up, but he's never going to mention it, so it's not important for this game). He was recalled to Cheyenne Mountain in 1997 and went on the second mission to Abydos to retrieve Daniel Jackson and then the mission to Chulak shortly after.
In the last minutes of the Chulak mission, Charlie was infested by an immature Goa'uld symbiote. He thought he'd just wrenched his neck and thought nothing of it.
A short while later he was officially given command of SG-2 (a field unit). He never got to go on his first solo command mission because of the Goa'uld symbiote.
The Death of Charles Kawalsky
Kawalsky started having blackouts. This was due to the Goa'uld taking over his mind and body and doing what it wanted. It killed one of the infirmary staff (Dr Nimzicki) and injured others (including knocking Sam Carter out and breaking Chevron Guy's arm). They tried to operate and take the Goa'uld out.
Prior to the operation, Kawalsky had a heart-to-heart with Jack O'Neill explaining that he didn't want there to be anything left of the snake. Jack asked that, if Kawalsky died, could he have Kawalsky's stereo. As it turned out, Jack did take Kawalsky's stereo. It was in Room 239/240 during Jack O'Neill's stay at Fandom High.
Kawalsky also expressed to General Hammond that he only wanted to wake up if he woke up as himself. They tried to remove the Goa'uld but it had already taken over the host. It tried to escape. Teal'c held Kawalsky's head halfway through the wormhole of the Stargate. When the Stargate shut down, the back of Kawalsky's skull and brains were gone. The rest kinda went splat on the ramp, along with the remnants of the Goa'uld.
He died. Obviously. This was in 1997.
Resurrection
Part of Stargate canon is an even that occurred in 2003 where an Asgard, Loki, cloned Jack O'Neill and ended up with a teenage version instead of an adult version. Asgard clones can be identical to the original DNA donor or at any stage of development in the donor's life. The Asgard are capable of transferring or 'copying' a person's consciousness into a body. They can also suppress/manipulate memories to a certain degree (as Loki did with some of the donors in his cloning research). This is what happened to Kawalsky, but for reasons unknown.

Where Canon and Kawalsky Go Separate Ways
Kawalsky died on the Stargate ramp after Teal'c held his head in the open Stargate and waited for it to be shut down. The back of Kawalsky's head was vaporized. From this point on in canon, it is assumed that he is dead, despite appearing in alternate universes and virtual reality scenarios.
For reasons unknown, the Asgard Loki took Kawalsky's DNA and cloned him in teenage form. The timeline of this cloning process is uncertain. As far as Kawalsky is consciously aware, only a few minutes appeared to pass between his death on the ramp and finding himself in his new teenage body outside Fandom High.
In Fandom
Living Arrangements
Kawalsky was deposited at the front gate of Fandom High on September 12, 2005. He was unaware of his change in predicament at first, but soon discovered that life had gone on in Colorado without him for eight years. He moved into Room 239 with Elizabeth Weir. Kawalsky, Elizabeth Weir, Jack O'Neill and Aeryn Sun gained permission from Spider Jerusalem to knock down the wall between their rooms to form Suite 239/240. Janet Fraiser moved in some time after.
On January 5 2006, Kawalsky decided to move out of Suite 239/240 and into his own room, 223. Cameron Mitchell moved in as his roommate on February 15, 2006.
Relationships
Kawalsky thankfully found some familiar faces when he first arrived in Fandom. He knew Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter and Janet Fraiser from his brief time at Stargate Command. He quickly built up a rapport with Elizabeth Weir when they became roommates. A short time later, Kawalsky and Elizabeth entered a romantic relationship together. This lasted until an irreconcilable difference caused them to break up on March 28 2006. He briefly dated Marie D'Ancanto over the summer, but they parted amicably. Kawalsky finally acted on his feelings for Alanna of Trebond on November 21, 2006 at his birthday party at Caritas. They have been dating ever since and their relationship has developed into something serious enough that Kawalsky told Alanna about his previously hidden past.
Kawalsky's best friend is Samantha Carter. He is part of the Stickbug cabin brotherhood with Jamie Madrox, Greg Sanders, John Crichton, Tyler Durden, Peter Parker, Cameron Mitchell and Peter Pevensie. He is also friends with Seely Booth, Hamlet Dane Jr and Callisto among others. He considers Molly Hayes to be a surrogate little sister.
Kawalsky had an odd pseudo-friendship with Sheriff Tex that often resulted in him either being possessed, getting injured or being thrown into the duck pond. There is a lot of animosity between himself and Jack Harkness, mostly due to their involvement with Samantha Carter.
Kawalsky's friendship with Alianne of Pirate's Swoop was complicated during his time at Fandom High, partially due to the fact that he was dating her mother, and partially due to the fact that Aly knew quite a bit more about Kawalsky's future than she's letting on.
In April 2007, Alanna and Kawalsky broke up under emotional circumstances. Their unexpected separation led to Aly changing into various forms as the timeline tried to hold itself together. They sorted out their problems several days later and Aly returned to her normal self. Through a series of events, Kawalsky learned and confirmed that he will, in fact, one day be Aly's father.
After graduation and Alanna's inevitable return to Tortall, Charlie and Alanna went their separate ways. Their separation has not seemed to have any effect on Aly, not even when Alanna turned up at Aeryn Sun and John Crichton's wedding with George Cooper as her date. Kawalsky has remained single.

Zombie Weekend
September 22-23, 2005
Kawalsky helped to fight off the zombies when they attacked Fandom in September 2005. He was part of the team that helped to hold the library, and then part of the team that went to get food for the survivors.
Sidekick Tryouts
September 25, 2005
When superhero teacher Professor Tick held sidekick tryouts, Kawalsky jokingly auditioned. Professor Tick claimed that he could not take Kawalsky on as his sidekick because he was already superhero material. From that day on, Kawalsky had the superhero alias Major K!. He occasionally dabbles in being a superhero because of this event.
Hathor
October 5, 2005
When the Goa'uld Hathor arrived in Fandom and possessed Janet Fraiser, Kawalsky was made her First Prime (chief slave). Hathor seduced Kawalsky with pheromones, playing on his attraction to Janet. After the event, he couldn't remember anything he did while under the influence of the pheromones, but he did wake up with a giant H 'tattooed' on his forehead with a Sharpie and wearing armor made out of aluminum foil.
Homecoming 2005

Kawalsky went to Homecoming dressed in denim with teased hair and the bandana of love. He went with then-girlfriend Elizabeth Weir and friend Janet Fraiser.
Plotting Zoo Trip
October 23, 2005
When Kawalsky visited the Plotting Zoo and was convinced to pet the Plot Snake, he found himself acting like Samuel L. Jackson for the rest of the day. This involved a fight with Rorzilla (aka "Roary").
Giraffe Hunting
November 20, 2005
Kawalsky, Hamlet Dane Jr, Callisto and Bridge Carson found themselves out in the woods one night after hearing an unexpected noise. They found a miniature giraffe named Earl and captured him. Despite wanting to keep him, they thought it best to pass Earl off to Professor Ted "Theodore" Logan to look after.
The Heist
December 19, 2005
Kawalsky participated in the event known as the Heist, which gathered a group of elite students together to steal the X-Box from the Teachers' Lounge. His codename was Lazarus.
Being Santa Kawalsky
December 25, 2005
As one of the students who remained behind over Christmas break, Kawalsky got bored and dressed as Santa Claus. He went around giving people candy and set up a throne in the first floor lobby where people could sit on his knee and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. It was quite weird, and he was dubbed Santa Kawalsky by some passersby.
O'Malley
December 2005 - January 2006
When Tex was taken over by her evil AI, O'Malley, Kawalsky kept an eye on Tex's activities. He was then approached by the ghost of Private Leonard Church, Tex's ex-boyfriend, and consented to Church taking over Kawalsky's body for a few days in order to get the situation under control. Church and Kawalsky, with the help of Mayor Red and The Tick, defeated O'Malley.
Snow Weekend
January 28-29, 2006
Although originally fighting the snow monsters that attacked Fandom in January 2006, Kawalsky smugly bit the carrot nose of one of the defeated monsters and found himself a mindless minion of the snow monsters. He, along with Artie, the Strongest Man in the World, created many monsters that attacked the citizens of Fandom. The escapade ended in Kawalsky and Artie going to All & Sundries looking for clogs. They passed out there and woke up as themselves the next morning, remembering everything.
Kidnapping Camulus
March 9, 2006
With the help of Tex, Molly Hayes, Samantha Carter and Cameron Mitchell, Kawalsky led an operation to kidnap the Goa'uld Camulus, who had been teaching at Fandom High, and deliver him to United States Air Force operatives at the causeway. The mission failed.
The Trust
March 13, 2006
When he learned from then girlfriend Elizabeth Weir that a cell of The Trust (a renegade organization with knowledge of the Stargate program) had been kidnapping her and stood to threaten her in the future, he made a deal with Tex to accompany him to the mainland. There, they wiped out the cell and destroyed the warehouse that acted as their base of operations. Kawalsky sustained a fairly serious abdominal injury. When Elizabeth learned of what Kawalsky had done - something that stepped over the boundaries of acceptability, even for him, due to the emotions involved - she broke up with him. Having scared himself at his overreaction, he has kept his distance ever since.
Prom 2006

Kawalsky went to prom with Alanna of Trebond, whom he asked on a whim despite having only just met her. Apparently he had a fantastic time. He later helped Hamlet Dane Jr to blow up the prom volcano on the beach to celebrate Hamlet's birthday.
Weetiny Weekend 2006
April 29-30, 2006
Like most of the student body, Kawalsky was de-aged over what has come to be known as Weetiny Weekend. He reverted to the physical and mental age of a 6 year old boy. As it turns out, he was a very rambunctuous child with a loud voice. He made many friends, had a pillow fight with Cameron Mitchell and had ice cream for breakfast thanks to a normally aged babysitter, Molly Hayes in the morning. In the afternoon, he clung to Tex and was thrown into the duck pond for his efforts. He then had a lovely conversation with Becky Vartan and Miho who he dubbed "MRS AND MRS GRAY PEOPLE." In the evening, he watched some weddings performed and then found a new best friend in Draco Malfoy. They went monster hunting, and then he had Swedish meatballs with Pippi Longstocking and her friends before retiring for the night.
Are You My Mummy?
June 6-10, 2006
Kawalsky was part of the unfortunate group who were affected when Rory Gilmore read from an Ancient Egyptian book. The result was a week of nightmares, hallucinations and plagues that culminated in a battle with mummies, scarab beetles, scorpions and the mummy king. Kawalsky was the leader of Group 1 consisting of Samantha Carter, Tyler Durden, Alanna of Trebond, Isabel Evans, Molly Hayes, Xander Harris, Luna Lovegood, M. Parker, Bridge Carson and Cameron Mitchell. They defeated the mummy king, thus returning Fandom to normal. Well, as normal as Fandom gets.
Grease Weekend

Samantha Carter baked cookies using an ingredient that was native to Fandom rather than vanilla. The result was a batch of cookies that made all who ate them think that they were characters from the musical Grease. Kawalsky was Danny Zuko to Sam's Sandra Dee. They reenacted the musical, complete with songs, until the effect eventually wore off. Kawalsky was highly amused by the weekend, especially since he got to beat Anakin Skywalker at a rickshaw race.
Student Council
September 2006
In Fall semester 2006, Kawalsky ran for Senior Representative on the Student Council. He won, much to his surprise. He only ran because Alanna of Trebond asked him to and he was trying to impress her.
Sixth Floor Go Boom
October 24 - November 4, 2006
On October 24, 2006, Kawalsky accompanied Hamlet Dane Jr and several others to the sixth floor to look for Earl the miniature giraffe. They weren't successful, but they did find a book. Hamlet did some investigating and found that there was an evil creature that had been devouring the residents of the sixth floor, which explained where everyone had disappeared over the years. Hamlet and Kawalsky returned to the sixth floor a week later to combat the beast. They succeeded, but in response to its defeat, the sixth floor hypercubes collapsed in on themselves. Hamlet and Kawalsky escaped unscathed, but Earl is MIA, believed dead, and all that is left of the sixth floor is the common room and rooms 601-604.
Troll Invasion
December 1-2, 2006
Kawalsky was part of the force that held the trolls back at the front gates of the school, and then later in town. He teamed up with Samantha Carter at the gates and they made their way over the perimeter wall and into town, where they met up with Alanna of Trebond and Alianne of Pirate's Swoop. After spending the night hiding out in a makeshift tent in the Imperial Junk Yard, they made it to the town meeting in Caritas and joined the attack on Efferton Manor to release the hostages taken by the trolls. Kawalsky spent the rest of the night tracking down the knives Aly had lost in the fight.
Krycek and the Bounty Hunter
December 5, 2006
When walking back to the dorms late at night, Kawalsky spotted Alex Krycek going into the weapons locker. He spied on him out of curiosity and then followed him towards town. When a man, later revealed to be an alien bounty hunter, went to attack Krycek, Kawalsky knocked him down to avoid them both being shot. The two escaped into the Preserve and eluded the bounty hunter until they could trick and kill him with a stab to the back of the neck. During this ordeal, Kawalsky was shot in the leg (later healed by Alanna of Trebond) and learned that Krycek is, like Kawalsky, a teenage clone with the consciousness of someone now considered dead to the world.
Alanna's Ordeal
December 15, 2006
Kawalsky joined Alanna of Trebond and several classmates on a trip to Alanna's home country, Tortall, for her Ordeal of Knighthood. He met Raoul of Goldenlake, Gareth of Naxen, Alex of Tirragen, Lady Delia, Thom of Trebond and George Cooper (King of Thieves). This was his first introduction to Tortall and its ways.
I Dream of Jeannie
December 19-24, 2006
On the morning of December 19, Kawalsky was jogging along Serenity Cove when he found a bottle in the sand. After rubbing away at the glass, he found that the bottle contained a genie, Jeannie. She then granted all of his wishes for the next week, including making it rain pudding on Jack Harkness, being a Prince (of Freedonia), getting pizza from Rome, being President of the United States, making everyone be nice to each other (which resulted in a Care Bear conquest of Fandom), making everyone animals (resulting in the Fandom version of Finding Nemo), being a pirate, a space cowboy, a ninja, a knight (Narnian, of course) and a professional hockey player for the NHL (but it was for the Colorado Avalanche, so he hated it). After an argument with Alanna about keeping secrets from her (and because Jeannie was driving him crazy), he sent Jeannie back out to sea to find a master more worthy of her time.
AU Weekend
January 20-21, 2007
During the weekend where most characters turned into someone else (either an alternate universe version of themselves or another character based on their actor or name), Kawalsky turned into Kowalski the commando penguin from the movie Madagascar. He spent the weekend trying to push lifeguard CJ Parker (really Pam Beesly) off a cliff, allowing Katara go penguin sledding on him, playing Zazu to Simba the lion cub (really Hamlet Dane Jr) in a big I Just Can't Wait to Be King musical number, avoiding being eaten by Mufasa (really Darth Vader) and attempting to hijack the island and drive it to Antarctica. When he was back to his normal self, Kawalsky found this hysterical.
Shadow Attack
February 1-2, 2007
In early February 2007, Cameron Mitchell and Molly Hayes released some shadowy creatures from a cave at Serenity Cove. The creatures attacked several people, leading to the victims starting to lose tangibility. Kawalsky came to help out with the final reading of a spell to recapture the creatures, doing their part of the spell with Eric Weiss and Geordi LaForge. He, like the others, was attacked by the creatures during the recitation of the spell.
Weetiny Adults 2007
February 18-19, 2007
Kawalsky was pounced on by a five year old Alianne of Pirate's Swoop during the weekend where many of Fandom's adults were turned into weetiny children. Aly called Kawalsky 'Daddy'. Considering that Aly is Alanna of Trebond's daughter from the future, and that Kawalsky is dating Alanna, this led to some emotional turmoil (ie: freaking out) by Kawalsky. He became jealous, however, when he found out that weetiny Aly also called Jack Harkness 'Daddy'. This led to a confrontation with Jack that resulted in a physical scuffle. Once Aly was back to normal, she tried to backpedal to save her future timeline. Kawalsky took this as a claim that he wasn't her father, leaving him surprisingly disappointed.
Big Damn Flood
March 10-11, 2007
Kawalsky managed to avoid most of the fighting with the new aquatic residents, but did end up in his rowboat with Jamie Madrox watching the Madrox Synchronized Swimming ballet Swan Lake. With explosions.
Prom 2007

Charlie went to prom with girlfriend, Alanna of Trebond. He was nominated for Prom King along with John Crichton, but lost to Jack Harkness. Crichton and Kawalsky then did the tango and were joined by Peter Pevensie. Peter Parker and Greg Sanders then joined in for the upperclassman Stickbug conga line.
ZOMGIHAVEKIDS?
April 15-17, 2007
When a vortex opened in the park and children of Fandom residents from alternate universes began to arrive, Kawalsky found himself the father of Edward "Eddie" Denver Kawalsky (named after Eddie Giacomin of the New York Rangers and Denver the holographic Danger Shop dinosaur) and Louise "Lou" Audrey Kawalsky (named after Louis Ferretti and Audrey Kawalsky). Their mother is Samantha Carter. In Eddie and Lou's universe, Sam and Charlie are together (it's uncertain whether they are married) and the family lives on a ship and travels often. Eddie (age 7) and Lou (age 5) were supposedly born in 2012 and 2014, giving Fandom High's Sam and Charlie 5 years to find out if they're actually from their own future or an alternate one.

Living Arrangements
Charlie is currently travelling. He has no set home, but he has lived briefly in a number of places, including Lafayette IN, Cabot Cove ME, Philadelphia PA, Harrison NY (with his sister, brother-in-law and nephews) and Colorado Springs CO (with Sam Carter and Louis Ferretti on separate occasions).
Jobs
Since leaving Fandom, Charlie has found work as a bartender, a Lost Boy, sidekick to a mystery novelist/crime solver, a Dairy Queen employee in Indiana and as a kitchenhand at The Briny Deep Seafood Restaurant in Philadelphia.
Adventures
To the End of the Universe and Back
After graduation, Charlie and Sam Carter used Portalocity to explore some of the multiverse, making their way to such prominent places as the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and Neverland. Sam left shortly after Neverland to go to a geek conference.
Murder She Wrote
Kawalsky then took up travelling on his own, ending up in Cabot Cove in the 80s where he assisted a writer, Jessica Fletcher, in solving a few mysteries. Mostly he just watched.
Family Reunion
In August, Louis Ferretti broke protocol and informed Kawalsky that his mother was on her death bed in a hospital in Florida. The Air Force had guards on her, knowing if the news broke that Kawalsky would try to see her despite the fact that his family believed him to be dead. He recruited Samantha Carter, John Crichton, Alianne of Pirate's Swoop and Alex Krycek to drive down to Florida and help him get into the hospital past the Air Force guards. They were unsuccessful and were detained by Air Force military police until General Jack O'Neill arrived to pull a few strings. Charlie got to see his mother, explain what happened and introduce her to Aly (her granddaughter from the future) before she died. He also ran into his sister, Jane, who was given clearance to hear the story as well. No charges were pressed.
Cross-Country
After this, Charlie went to Colorado to stay at Ferretti's place for a while. He grieved and eventually had a large argument with Ferretti, who had known about Audrey Kawalsky's illness for some time. He left Colorado and started travelling across the country, working at a Dairy Queen in Lafayette, Indiana in September and The Briny Deep Seafood Restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in October.
Parents Weekend 2007
During Parents Weekend 2007, Baron Charles Kawalsky of Pirate's Swoop and The Lioness, Sir Alanna (Aly's parents from approximately 30 years in the future) visited for the weekend. They broke a few brains, let a few of their friends in on the big secret and, of course, visited their daughter. The current versions of Charlie and Alanna haven't been informed about the visit.
John & Aeryn's Wedding
In November, Charlie joined John Crichton at his bachelor party in Las Vegas and then attended the wedding in Massachusetts. He saw and spoke to Alanna for the first time since her departure in May, only to discover that she was dating her long time friend, George Cooper. This didn't seem to effect Aly in any way, so he didn't interfere. Yet.
Laying Low
Kawalsky spent Christmas with Samantha Carter and then went off to Harrison, New York (his old hometown) to spend some time with his sister and her family, and also to figure out his next move. He left in March for Tortall, deciding it was time to figure out how to live the life he was supposed to live.
Kawalsky: The First Adventure
Portalocity dumped Charlie in the middle of backwater Tortall, over a week's ride from the capital city, Corus. He landed face-down in the mud, but was able to find shelter for a few days with a local farmer, Henry, and learn that he was in the fief of Josu's Dirk. After giving up on the weather getting any better, he headed out through Coas Wood to the Great Road East in order to find safe passage to Corus.
