Background

So let's... try to throw this in a nutshell. Beware of spoilers, all ye who dare read this.
Alphonse is the younger of the Elric brothers by a year. They both come from an alternate universe, born and raised in the small, country town Risembool in the far east of the country Amestris. At the age of five or six, they started to study alchemy on their own and before long were performing basic, yet flawless transmutations. This went on for a few years, until around eight years old their mother caught a fatal disease and, soon enough, passed away. For approximately half a year they continued their alchemy studies under Izumi Curtis (where they also learned how to spar and defend themselves), and once they returned home, decided to attempt to bring their mother back to life with alchemy. Despite the warnings they had from books and people, they followed through with it. In the end it was far from successful. It's entirely impossible to bring a dead person back to life, so the transmutation rebounded pretty badly on them both.

Alphonse ended up loosing his entire body as a 'token' for passing through the Gate, and Edward just his leg; but, of course, he wasn't going to let his brother stay gone, so by sacrificing his arm he was able to bound Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor via alchemy.

Afterwards they both left their home, determined to find a way to return their bodies back to the way they were. In the end they managed to get the Philosopher's Stone, though Alphonse had to use it in order to revive Edward after getting himself fatally stabbed, and in return sacrificed himself to bring back Alphonse, who'd disappeared after using the Stone.

Lo and behold, Alphonse is back! He's been restored to the way he was the night the human transmutation rebounded on them (at eleven years old), except now his memories of the four years he was bound to the armor are gone (they were used in part of the 'exchange' of Edward's transmutation to get Alphonse back). He lives with Winry Rockbell back in Risembool for a while before deciding he wanted to train more under Izumi.

Two years later, and still just as determined as before to find his brother again, Alphonse wanders from place to place seeking for the information he needs.

Where Canon and Alphonse go separate ways

Alphonse is pulled some time before the movie, so none of the events have happened yet (and probably won't, as they did in canon), though when he was first brought in Izumi had passed away at least several months prior.

He was fourteen when he first came to Fandom, not thirteen.

Actually, the timeline is so messed with on top of an already crazy timeline that, really, the best thing to do is to pretend everything makes sense. Who knows, but who cares?

Holes and unexplained things that aren't in canon are filled when necessary.

In Fandom

Why he came to Fandom isn't anything major; after Izumi's death (or even a little before so, as she was getting rather sickly by then), Alphonse wasn't doing much of anything... So, now residing back in Risembool with the Rockbells, Pinako's booted him off to school in hopes of making himself more productive. I think the line that goes after that is, "Oh, if only she knew what she was getting him into..."

Living Arrangements

Lived on the third floor in room 303 with Walter Dornez, also shared by the kitty Cuddles and the hellpuppy Pup.
Later, they both moved on over to the fifth floor in the massive room 502/4/6 with Nadia Santos, Jamie Madrox, and Pippi Longstocking (Character).

Relationships

It does not matter what she or anyone else says, Alphonse does not wish to fornicate with Pippi Longstocking (Character). Really! He doesn't.
